Mujeres de Iglesia (1997)

novicias-4 recortada

Whenever I talk to friends I tell them that I began my journey around the world of religions in a strange way. Attending a very sad family ceremony, I intuited that the subject of faith would be important to me. However, this soon slipped my mind.

Two years later, while looking for an idea for the Sunday magazine of La Vanguardia,  I began the illustrated feature “Novices in a Cloistered Convent”. This was the first time I had entered a cloistered convent and when they opened the grille, the entire community came to greet me with emotion. They surrounded me, touched me and asked me what I was feeling. I felt a sweet energy floating around me. It was something I myself could perceive…

I travelled to London to find out how female Anglican priests live, and to Rwanda to share the everyday life of women missionaries in a country at war. I also went to Africa, China, Nepal, India, Israel, Palestina, Japan, and the US, always photographing – parallel to other features of a more social nature – different religious sensibilities, and the spirituality of women in the world. Sometimes, as if in a dream, I let myself be swept along by such close proximity. I learn and, in this way, maintain the same hopes and enthusiasm of my very first day on the job.
